WG 4 – MPEG Video Coding

Terms of reference: Development of coding and compression of digital representations and descriptions of moving pictures generated or captured by any technology; efficiency evaluation of coding systems and content description methods related to visual information; implementation feasibility analysis of coding systems and content description methods, with the following programme of work

  • Serve as responsible body within ISO/IEC for recommending a set of standards consistent with the scope;
  • Cooperate with other standardisation bodies dealing with similar applications;
  • Define and collect test material and information target presentation devices;
  • Establish performance and complexity analysis criteria;
  • Develop methods for subjective assessment;
  • Carry out performance analysis by core experiments;
  • Perform complexity analysis for representative sets of tools and algorithms;
  • Develop and test efficient coding-decoding algorithms based on responses to Calls for Proposals;
  • Evaluate coding techniques and descriptions based on their performance by subjective testing, efficiency with respect to software and hardware implementation, and feasibility of systems architectures;
  • Develop international standards for coding and compression of digital representations and descriptions of moving pictures and immersive video content captured or generated with any technology;
  • Provide source code implementation of proposed standards;
  • Solicit inputs from and liaise with external bodies;
  • Perform explorations on new technology trend areas within the scope of work.
